Dubai; Al Ain FC at Christmas
Had another wonderful period in the Emirates during the Christmas period. Meeting with the President of the UAE FA, Mohamed Khalfan Al-Romaithi and Technical Director, Obied Mubarak gave me another insight into the commitment this part of the world has to excellence. Both were keen embrace Athletic Development as a major factor in the development of their players and have commenced an investigation into all the structures and strategies that could be considered. It was a pleasure to also meet the Head of Coaching Development, Bernard Chom who clearly recognised the need for coaches to embrace the role of Athletic Development within their skill / tactical toolbox.
Being able to spend a day with Mick McDermott at the Al Ain Football Club was a highlight of the visit. As well as being an exemplary practitioner, Mick is also a close friend and it was great to see him in action with his players. Here is a practitioner who understands the complexities of compromise and while he grapples with the issues of history and tradition in the sport he certainly makes a difference. Seeing his exercise selection and delivery for both performance enhancement and injury rehabilitation is always exciting.
You may never get enough time for 'best practice' but the time you have must be used appropriately. Even with just a few minutes a day you can make a difference especially if you can encourage the players to embrace their 'homework'. For the developing player this 'homework' can work out to be their pathway to long-term success as the major movement limitations are eradicated. For the senior player, ensconced in a bubble of sports specific concentration, these precious minutes are a lifeline to extending their careers.
